I haven't payed much attention to it really at all but I was wondering if anybody has been able to crack these bad boys open? I'm not sure what is involved but would anybody mind giving me a little insight as to whether it's being worked on or if everybody kind of just moved along and didn't care for trying?

Crap, I missed that.

Yeah, I've heard nothing about the anniversary edition.

Hey Nintendo, how ya been? And yes Gary, I meant Halo Anniversary. I searched around a bit but found nothing on any progress towards modifying this version of Halo 1. I was really hoping it may have re-invigorated a few people to take a peep around in the .map files.

As I recall, pretty much all of the new stuff is located in the s3dpak files (which the Saber3D engine uses), not the map files (which the Halo engine uses). So it's more about peeping around Saber's file formats, which weren't all that interesting (to me at least).
